runaway fugitives during Underground Railroad Era.
In
fact entire village of Brandon was known for expediting
the cause of fugitives as local homeowners offered safe space
in their dwellings.
Historic Brandon is the birthplace of
Stephen A. Douglas born 1813, recognized as the "little
giant" of national politics, a noted prohibitionist and
skillful orator. Stephen Douglas achieved his career heights
in 1858, during the famous debates with his opponent Abraham
